Brick Lane has been the heart of London’s Bangladeshi community for decades, and most of its curry houses trace their cooking to Sylhet. Within a few minutes’ walk you can move from late-opening Brick Lane dining rooms to South Indian dosa on Hanbury Street, Dhaka-style birany on Mile End Road and quieter kitchens along Whitechapel Road. Menus below are the dishes and prices we have saved for each restaurant; several are partial, so open each menu for what is listed.
Brick Lane (E1 6)
Muhib, Curry Bazaar, Graam Bangla, Masala and City Spice line the stretch between Osborn Street and the old Truman Brewery. Curry Bazaar keeps the latest weekend hours on Google — until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Spitalfields and Hanbury Street
Dosa World on Hanbury Street brings Kerala and Tamil dishes to the area — dosa, sambar and thoran — and is the strongest vegetarian choice here. Google lists it closed on Fridays.
Whitechapel and Mile End Road
Haji on Mile End Road and Kolapata on Whitechapel Road focus on Bangladeshi home cooking: kachchi birany, polao, khichuri and bhorta mashes rarely found on high-street menus.
Aldgate and Petticoat Lane
Mumbai Square on Middlesex Street is the closest to Liverpool Street and Aldgate, convenient for City workers.
